How to tell what you are looking at - Samurai vs. Modern Kamishimo

As you can see in our first picture, there are some differences between these 3 kataginu. The one on top is
from the Meiji Era and the others are more modern. You will find that the cut of the antique piece is different
as well as the obvious size difference.
Please note that in the antique piece, the shoulder taper is more apparant. Some newer pieces have no
taper in the shoulder at all.
Here we have the front and back pictured on the left for the Meiji piece. On the right are the fronts and backs
of two different modern pieces. Note the length of the antique piece and keep in mind that it is narrower than
the modern pieces as pictured in the overlays above.
Please note that as see on on our main education page, a Kataginu is a shoulder garment and a Kamishimo is the
Kataginu and matching Hakama as a set.
